Students may undergo a variety of stressors.  In particular, if you encounter any of the following five problems, plans are already in place to help you.  If you experience:

Mental Stress                                    

Anyone can experience personal or relationship problems that cause mental stress.  Students who encounter difficulty of this nature have access to a wide variety of free and confidential counselling services through the University of Calgary Health and Wellness program.
You are also welcome to come and see us in Student Affairs for advise or for a referral to our in house Counsellor, Jeff Vander Werf.  The Peer Listeners are also an important source for students who are experiencing stress (see the section 

Academic Difficulty                              

The intellectual rigors of medical school are such that on rare occasions students may find themselves in academic difficulty with one or more courses.  For this reason, the have been established.  Students may also be referred to the Associate or Assistant Dean. Students may also contact Alberta Medical Association, Physician and Family Dupport Program at Toll Free: 1-877-767-4637. It is a 24-hour assistance. 
The Student Accessibility Services also assists students with learning difficulties and accommodations.

Harassment                                    

Harassment of any kind is not tolerated in our program and reports are taken seriously.  Students who report incidents of harassment will be treated in a professional, compassionate, and respectful manner.  Do not hesitate to seek advice and assistance.  See the section on

Money Stress                                       

Students in any discipline are subject to money stress, especially as education costs continue to rise.  Money problems are a common and serious concern.  Take advantage of the resources set in place to alleviate the problem.  Our existing bursary program offers many possibilities.  Dr. Ian Walker (Director of Admissions) and Dr. Patrick Lee (Associate Director of Student Affairs), can also been seen regarding financial concerns

Needlestick Injuries                      

Students who for any reason are exposed to another's body fluids and are concerned about the potential health risks should IMMEDIATELYseek assistance.  If you have any cause for concern it is in your best interest to act quickly.  Please refer to the
